For their 40th release on Dreamride, Rich Venom teams up with Egyptian DJ and producer Jefrey Blake to deliver Border Lights, a progressive house track that merges emotive storytelling with dancefloor energy.
We spoke with Jefrey Blake about the creation of Border Lights, the collaboration process, and the production techniques behind this standout release.
Hi Jefrey! Nice to talk with you!
What was the original idea or inspiration behind Border Lights?
The original idea actually came from Rich Venom. Around the same time I asked him for a remix of my track Colors, he suggested we work on a collaboration together. He sent me an early sketch with the main melodic idea, and I started developing it on my side, especially working on the bassline and the rhythm while keeping his original vibe.
How did the collaboration between you two begin, and how did the track develop during the process?
We mostly worked in parallel, each developing our own ideas before bringing everything together. The track didn’t change that much from the initial concept - it was more about refining and improving the mix and overall quality rather than reworking the structure.
The track has a strong atmospheric and melodic identity. What elements were most important to you while producing it?
Energy and atmosphere were the key elements. We wanted something that feels enveloping and immersive, but still very danceable at the same time.
How did you approach the balance between dancefloor energy and emotional storytelling in this release?
The balance comes quite naturally from the structure. The break brings the emotional side, and the drop delivers the energy. The melody acts as a thread throughout the track, staying in your head and connecting both aspects.
Can you tell us a bit about the sound design and production techniques used in Border Lights?
We focused on keeping a lot of clarity in the mix, making sure everything feels open and airy. The synths are powerful, with a strong lead and a catchy melodic hook, but without overcrowding the track.
What role did the Dreamride label play in bringing this release to life?
Dreamride is Rich Venom’s label, so it felt very natural to release the track there. Artistically, it’s also a perfect fit for this kind of sound.
In which type of setting do you imagine this track being played — peak-time club, late-night set, or festival moment?
Definitely peak-time, whether it’s in a club or during a festival. It has that kind of energy that works in both environments.
What emotions or images do you hope listeners experience when they hear Border Lights?
We want people to feel both emotion and sensation. The title itself reflects a kind of boundary — I’m based in France and Rich is in Italy. We’re very close geographically, but there are still different cultures. The track represents that connection between two spaces.
How does this track represent your current artistic direction as producers?
Like my recent tracks, I feel like I’ve reached a certain level of maturity. I’m not fixed in one direction - ideas keep evolving - but I’m now able to express emotions more clearly through structure and sound design.
What can fans expect next from Jefrey Blake and Rich Venom?
We’re currently working on a new collaboration, in a similar way to this one. It’s still in progress, I’m actually working on it right now. And of course, we both continue our solo projects, with new releases and probably some remixes as well.
Thank you Jefrey for the interview! And good luck with your future productions and projects!
