With over two decades dedicated to electronic music, Alessandro Micca—better known as Alex Micca—has developed a magnetic and intense sound that resonates far beyond Italy’s borders.

Drawing on influences from European techno and Berlin’s atmospheric depths, he has delivered standout releases on labels like Gain Records, Planet Rhythm, IAMT, RAVE Plus, Kaligo, and HAUTBOXx.

His EP To The Moon broke into Beatport’s Top 10, while Sex Machine—featuring a remix by Sisko Electrofanatik—hit the Top 3 and won support from some of the scene’s most respected selectors.

Now, with his latest HAUTBOXx release More Than Me featuring remixes from c-HAUTEM, Apollo (US), and LANDER B, Micca continues to prove why his music connects so powerfully with the dancefloor.

Hi Alex, so nice to talk with you for Techno Culture Magazine!

How are you, and where are you doing this interview?

Hi I’m doing great right now, and I’m actually doing this interview straight from the airport, where I’m waiting for my flight to the next party in Malta! I’m super excited because, on top of this trip, my latest record released on Planet Rhythm is already climbing the Beatport charts and has reached the Top 15.

You’ve been surrounded by electronic music since childhood – what first drew you to the sounds of techno?

What immediately captivated me was the hypnotic energy of techno: repetitive loops, powerful kicks, the feeling that every sound element could take you into an almost meditative yet adrenaline-charged state. It was music that didn’t leave you indifferent; it enveloped you.

How did your early experiences in Italy influence your approach to DJing and production?

Italy has a long-standing clubbing tradition, especially in the north and in major cities. Growing up in this environment meant experiencing nights where techno wasn’t just music, but a collective ritual. I quickly learned the importance of reading the dancefloor and creating a sonic journey that was both physical and mental. I am only sorry that in recent years all this has tended to disappear.

Your signature sound has been described as magnetic and visceral – how would you define it, and what elements make it uniquely yours?

I’d define it as a mix of power and depth. I love solid basslines, punchy kicks, and dark atmospheres, but always with a melodic or textural detail that adds personality. What makes it “mine” is the combination of direct groove and layered sounds that capture the mind.

After more than twenty years behind the scenes, how has your approach to building sets evolved?

At first, I was very focused on technique and perfect mixing. Over time, I realized that the true heart of a set is storytelling. Today, I think more in terms of a journey: building tension, creating moments of breath, and then explosion. Experience has taught me that connection with the audience is key.

In 2024, your EP To The Moon entered Beatport’s Top 10 – what did this milestone mean to you?

It was a huge recognition, a confirmation that the path I had chosen was the right one. Beatport is a platform followed by DJs all over the world, so knowing that my sounds resonated so strongly was extremely gratifying.

Sex Machine reached the Top 3 and featured a remix by Sisko Electrofanatik – how did this collaboration come about?

I’ve known Sisko for just over a year, but we immediately formed a strong friendship. He has also been a mentor for me, guiding me in new and important aspects of production, and I can honestly say he was the one who launched me into high-level music production. On New Year’s Eve, he locked himself in the studio, and the next day he gifted me a remix that was completely unexpected but deeply desired. His touch gave the track a unique power, elevating it to a level that truly reached a wide audience.

You’ve released on labels like Gain Records, Planet Rhythm, IAMT, Kaligo, RAVE Plus, and HAUTBOXx – how do you decide which label is best for a particular track?

Each label has its own sonic identity. When I compose a track, I think about which “home” would best showcase it. It’s not just about releasing a track, but about entering a context where the music can dialogue with other artists on the label.

Your latest album, More Than Me on HAUTBOXx Records, includes remixes from c-HAUTEM, Apollo (US), and LANDER B – what was your vision for this project, and how did the collaborations take shape?

My vision was to create an album that was a personal statement but also open to reinterpretation. That’s why I chose artists with different sensibilities: I wanted each of them to leave their signature, transforming my tracks into new sonic experiences.

What is your creative process when starting a new track – do you begin with drums, melody, or an idea you want to express?

I usually start with the melodies: that’s where I find the soul of the track. Once I have the main theme, I develop the rest – drums, groove, and atmospheres – until I create a balance that conveys the emotion I had in mind.

You’ve worked with respected labels like Gain Records, Planet Rhythm, and HAUTBOXx – what have these experiences taught you about today’s techno scene?

They’ve taught me that techno is constantly evolving. Every label has a different approach, but all of them aim for quality and sonic consistency. More than ever, authenticity is crucial today: audiences can immediately tell when a track has a soul.

How do you approach collaborations compared to producing solo tracks?

In collaborations, you need to leave space, set aside ego, and truly listen to the other person. It’s a creative dialogue, whereas with solo tracks I can freely follow my instinct. Both approaches enrich me.

Which artists have influenced your sound the most, and why?

Artists like Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, and Enrico Sangiuliano have shaped me. Mills for his futuristic vision, Hawtin for his minimal yet complex approach, Sangiuliano for his ability to create music outside the box and constantly push sonic boundaries. Each of them has taught me a different way to conceive techno.

How do you balance experimentation with creating music that connects on the dancefloor? The key is structure: you can experiment with sounds, textures, and arrangements, but you must maintain a solid and coherent groove to keep the energy alive on the floor. It’s a constant balance between creative freedom and functionality.

Your sound spans from European techno to Berlin-style dub techno – how do you incorporate these influences while staying unique?

I don’t try to copy a style; I absorb its essence. From the European school, I take the direct impact, and from the Berlin sound, the atmospheric depth. Mixing these with my personal background and sensitivity creates something unique.

Looking ahead, where do you see your sound and career evolving in the next five years?

I want to continue exploring and pushing my sound into new territories, perhaps working more on conceptual projects and cross-genre collaborations. Career-wise, my goal is to bring my music to increasingly international contexts while staying true to my vision.

Thank you so much for this interview, Alex—it’s been a pleasure learning more about your journey and creative process. We can’t wait to hear your future productions and see where your sound takes you next!
